About this card

Cards #701-726 are the 26 three-player Prospects cards, one per club - AL clubs first, each league in alphabetical order by city - with black-and-white player photos on the front. A Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card. On #703, #705, #712, #718 and #723, one or two of the players never reached the major leagues.

The story on this card

Bochy caught 55 games for Houston in 1979, backing up Alan Ashby, and hit .217 with one home run. Card #718 is the Astros entry in the 1979 Topps Prospects subset, shared with Mike Fischlin and Don Pisker. It is the rookie card for all three. Bruce Bochy was a backup catcher for the Astros, Mets and Padres from 1978 to 1987, then managed the Padres, Giants and Rangers, winning World Series titles with San Francisco in 2010, 2012 and 2014 and Texas in 2023.

In 1978, Fischlin played 41 games at shortstop for Houston and collected 10 hits in 86 at-bats across 44 appearances. His 1979 Topps rookie card, Astros Prospects #718, grouped him with Bruce Bochy and Don Pisker. All 3 players were listed with Houston. Former Cleveland infielder Mike Fischlin managed the Myrtle Beach Blue Jays in 1989 and 1990. His minor-league playing career had covered 9 seasons between 1975 and 1988.

Pisker batted .287 with 11 home runs and 77 RBI for Charleston in 1978. Houston traded him to Toronto for Gary Woods that December. His 1979 Topps rookie card retained the Astros affiliation: Prospects #718 grouped Pisker with Bruce Bochy and Mike Fischlin, all identified with Houston. Houston outfield prospect Don Pisker played for Brooklawn American Legion Post 72 from 1970 through 1972, helping Joe Barth Sr.'s club win the 1971 state championship.
