About Frank White

Named a reserve on the 1978 American League All-Star team, his first selection, White batted once in the game and popped out against Rollie Fingers. He hit .275 with 7 home runs and 13 stolen bases, won his second Gold Glove, and made The Sporting News all-star team at second base. Kansas City lost a third consecutive ALCS to the Yankees, 3-1. Topps numbered his 1979 card #439.

Frank White spent all 18 of his major-league seasons, 1973 to 1990, with the Kansas City Royals, nearly all of them at second base. He won eight Gold Gloves between 1977 and 1987, the first American League second baseman to take the award eight times. He and George Brett appeared in 1,914 games together, a major-league record until 1995. A product of the Royals' baseball academy in Florida, he was its first graduate to reach the majors. A singles hitter early on, he hit 22 home runs in both 1985 and 1986 and won the 1986 Silver Slugger. He batted cleanup in the 1985 World Series, which Kansas City won 4-3. His .545 average in the 1980 ALCS against the Yankees made him that series' MVP, and his solo homer off Mike Scott decided the 1986 All-Star Game, 3-2 for the American League. He finished with 160 home runs and 886 RBIs in 2,324 games. The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994, and in 1995 the Royals retired his number 20 and added him to the Royals Hall of Fame. He later coached first base for the Red Sox and the Royals.
