1979 Topps #330 George Brett

About George Brett
Brett led the league in 1979 with 212 hits and 20 triples and finished third in the MVP vote. He batted .329 with 23 home runs and 107 RBI. With 42 doubles, he became the fifth player since 1900, and the second in the American League after Jeff Heath in 1941, with at least 20 doubles, triples and homers in one season. Topps #330 shows him with the Royals under an All-Star banner and followed his .294 season of 1978.
George Brett played third base and later first base for the Kansas City Royals for 21 seasons, 1973 through 1993. A left-handed hitter, he finished with 3,154 hits, 317 home runs, 1,595 RBI and a .305 average, and he won batting titles in 1976, 1980 and 1990, the only player to take one in three different decades. He was American League MVP in 1980, when he hit .390, a modern record for a third baseman, and he won a Gold Glove in 1985. He made 13 straight All-Star teams from 1976 to 1988. The Royals drafted the El Segundo, California, shortstop in the second round in 1971, and hitting coach Charley Lau rebuilt his swing in 1974. Kansas City lost three straight ALCS to the Yankees from 1976 to 1978, swept them in 1980, and won the 1985 World Series over St. Louis after Brett was MVP of the ALCS against Toronto. His pine tar home run off Goose Gossage on July 24, 1983 was ruled out, then restored on appeal. He played mostly first base from 1987, passed 3,000 hits in 1992 and retired after 1993. The Royals retired his number 5 in 1994, and he entered the Hall of Fame in 1999 in his first year of eligibility with 98.2 percent of the vote.
