1979 Topps #389 Joe Zdeb

About Joe Zdeb
After batting .252 in 60 games in 1978, Zdeb received Royals card #389 in 1979 Topps. He made 15 major league appearances in 1979. In his final plate appearance, on May 29 against Baltimore, he pinch hit for Steve Braun and beat out an infield single off Tippy Martinez.
Joe Zdeb was a right-handed outfielder for Kansas City who shared a minor league infield with George Brett before moving to the outfield. A baseball and football player at Maine South High School in Illinois, he signed with the Royals after they selected him in the fourth round in 1971, giving up a commitment to play football at Missouri. At Billings, a bad-hop grounder broke his nose; Brett moved from shortstop to third base while Zdeb was sidelined. Zdeb later studied at the University of Illinois during offseasons and worked as an insurance broker and financial adviser after baseball.
