About Mickey Mahler

Mahler made 26 appearances for the 1979 Braves, 18 of them starts. He went 5-11 with a 5.85 ERA in 100 innings. On September 25 he pitched two innings against Houston at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and allowed two runs, while his brother Rick threw a scoreless inning in the same game. His solo card that year is #331.

Mickey Mahler was a left-handed pitcher who worked in eight major league seasons between 1977 and 1986 for the Braves, Pirates, Angels, Expos, Tigers, Rangers and Blue Jays, finishing 14-32 with a 4.68 ERA. A Trinity University graduate drafted by Atlanta in the 10th round in 1974, he threw hard and relied on a big, slow curveball. He threw minor league no-hitters against Birmingham in 1974 and, for Richmond, against Toledo on June 1, 1977. His brother Rick, a teammate at Richmond, also pitched for Atlanta. Mahler's best day came on June 5, 1985, when he shut out the Giants on one hit for Montreal. Later that season, on September 18, 1985, he threw 7 2/3 innings of one-hit relief for Detroit to beat the Yankees and deny Phil Niekro his 300th win. He gave up Dave Winfield's 2,000th hit in 1986 and was known for quotable lines to reporters.
