About Tommy Boggs

Boggs started 12 of his 16 games for Atlanta in 1978 and went 2-8 with a 6.71 ERA, including a shutout. In 1979 he made three starts and went 0-2 with a 6.39 ERA over 12 2/3 innings. Card #384 lists him with the Atlanta Braves.

Tommy Boggs was a right-handed pitcher who worked in the majors for the Texas Rangers (1976, 1977, 1985) and the Atlanta Braves (1978 to 1983). A product of Lanier High School in Austin, he posted a 0.73 ERA as a senior in 1974 and was the second overall pick of that year's draft, taken by the Rangers. He debuted on July 19, 1976. In December 1977 he went to Atlanta with Adrian Devine and Eddie Miller in the first four-team trade in major league history, a deal that also moved Bert Blyleven to Pittsburgh and Al Oliver to Texas. In 1980 he went 12-9 with a 3.42 ERA and 3 shutouts over 192 1/3 innings. Rotator cuff trouble hit him in 1982 and 1983, and the Braves released him after the latter. He made the Rangers on Opening Day 1985 but was sent down in May. His major league record was 20-44 with a 4.22 ERA. He later coached baseball at Concordia University Texas from 2009 and won 325 games there. He died in 2022.
