1979 Topps #39 Dale Murphy

About Dale Murphy
On May 18, 1979, Murphy hit three home runs in a 6-4 win over the Giants, the only three-homer game of his career, and was batting .348 when cartilage damage in his left knee forced arthroscopic surgery. He did not return to full-time duty until July 19. Back in the lineup he had a five-hit game at San Diego on September 14, with two homers and a triple. He finished with 21 home runs in 104 games. His Braves card is #39.
Dale Murphy was the Atlanta Braves' center fielder through the 1980s and the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1982 and 1983. A catcher when the Braves took him fifth overall in the 1974 draft, he moved to first base and then the outfield, and won five consecutive Gold Gloves from 1982 to 1986. He made seven All-Star teams, led the league in home runs and RBI twice each, and in 1983 became the sixth player in history with 30 home runs and 30 steals in a season. He played 740 consecutive games, hit a career-high 44 home runs in 1987, and led the major leagues in home runs and RBI from 1981 to 1990. Known for his clean-living habits and charity work, he received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1985 and the Roberto Clemente Award in 1988. Atlanta traded him to Philadelphia in August 1990. He retired from the Rockies on May 27, 1993, with 398 home runs, and the Braves retired his number 3 in 1994.
