1979 Topps #332 Gary Alexander

About Gary Alexander
Alexander played 110 games for Cleveland in 1979, catching 91 of them and playing two in the outfield. He batted .229 with 15 home runs and 54 RBI. Card #332 puts him in an Indians uniform, the first Topps card to show him with that club.
Gary Alexander was a right-handed catcher who played seven major league seasons, 1975 through 1981, for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates. A Los Angeles native, he debuted with the Giants on September 12, 1975, and caught John Montefusco's no-hitter in 1976. In March 1978 he went to Oakland with five other players and $300,000 in the trade that sent Vida Blue to San Francisco, and in June of that year the A's sent him to Cleveland for Joe Wallis. His 1978 season was his best: career highs of 27 home runs, 84 RBI, 57 runs, 112 hits and 20 doubles in 148 games. On September 26, 1978, his two-out home run in the ninth inning ended Mike Flanagan's no-hit bid for Baltimore. He finished with a .230 average, 55 home runs and 202 RBI in 432 games, and later retired as a captain in the Los Angeles Fire Department.
