Ted Cox was a right-handed third baseman and outfielder who played five major league seasons, 1977 through 1981, for the Red Sox, Indians, Mariners and Blue Jays. Boston drafted him 17th overall in the first round in 1973. In 1977 he hit .334 with 14 home runs and 81 RBI for Triple-A Pawtucket and won the International League MVP award and Topps' Minor League Player of the Year honor. His major league debut came on September 18, 1977 in Baltimore: 4-for-4 with a walk, followed by two singles against the Yankees the next day, six straight hits to open a career, a record. Cleveland acquired him in a March 1978 trade. In 272 major league games he hit .245 with 10 home runs and 79 RBI. On April 9, 1980 he became the first American League player credited with an official game-winning RBI, a statistic kept only from 1980 to 1988. After baseball he ran batting cages in Oklahoma City, worked as the state's USSSA baseball director and coached at Midwest City High School and Oklahoma City University. He died on March 11, 2020.
