1979 Topps #122 Mike Paxton

About Mike Paxton
General manager Phil Seghi said he was counting on Paxton for 16 wins in 1979. Hit hard in each of his first four starts, he carried an ERA near 10.00 at the end of April and finished 8-8 with a 5.92 ERA in 33 games, 24 of them starts. Away from the mound, the Cleveland Basebelles booster club gave him its Humanitarian Award. His #122 card lists him with the Indians.
Mike Paxton was a right-handed pitcher from Memphis who worked for the Red Sox and Indians over four seasons, going 30-24 with a 4.71 ERA in 99 games. The Yankees drafted him out of Oakhaven High School in 1971, but he enrolled at Memphis State instead, and Boston picked him in the 23rd and last round of the 1975 draft. He went 17-3 with a 1.03 ERA across his first pro summer and the Florida Instructional League. Called up from Pawtucket in May 1977, he debuted on May 25 with a loss to Minnesota and finished 10-5. Cleveland acquired him in March 1978, and he posted career highs of 96 strikeouts, five complete games and 191 innings that year. He pitched four games in 1980 and finished in the minors in 1981.
