1979 Topps #84 Greg Minton

About Greg Minton
Minton threw 79 2/3 innings in 1979, all in relief across 46 appearances. He finished 4-3 with a 1.81 ERA and four saves. He struck out 33 and went hitless in four at bats. Card #84 shows him with the Giants.
Greg Minton was a right-handed reliever who pitched 16 seasons, 1975 to 1990, for the San Francisco Giants and California Angels, going 59-65 with a 3.10 ERA and 150 saves. An injury in 1979 led him to shorten his stride in place of a high leg kick to take pressure off his knee, and the new delivery produced a 92-mph sinker that hitters could not drive. He went 269 1/3 innings without allowing a home run until John Stearns connected on May 2, 1982. That season he went 10-4 with a 1.83 ERA and 30 saves, made his only All-Star team and finished sixth in National League Cy Young voting. On August 14, 1986, he gave up Pete Rose's record 4,256th hit. He moved to the Angels in 1987 and made 62 appearances in 1989. Elbow trouble ended his career in 1990, and he later coached pitchers in the Angels organization and managed the independent Lubbock Crickets. A native of Lubbock, he was called Moon Man.
