About Mike Sadek

Card #256 follows a 40-game 1978 with the San Francisco Giants, in which Sadek caught 37 times and hit .239 with 26 hits in 109 at-bats. He hit 2 home runs, his season high, drove in 9 runs and scored 15.

Mike Sadek was a backup catcher who spent his entire major league career with the San Francisco Giants. Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1969, he debuted on April 13, 1973 and played eight seasons in the majors, 1973 and 1975 through 1981, his last game coming on June 10, 1981. He appeared in 383 games and hit .226 with 5 home runs and 74 RBI, with his busiest years in 1979 (63 games) and 1980 (64 games, a .252 average). His nickname was The Sheik, coined by teammate Craig Robinson, who saw the name Mohammed Ahmed Sadek and told him, Hey, you're a sheik. He was known as one of the funniest jokesters in the game. Years later he served as Robert De Niro's body double for the throwing scenes in the 1996 film The Fan. Sadek died on January 20, 2021, at age 74.
