1979 Topps #11 Marc Hill

About Marc Hill
A broken wrist cut short Hill's 1979 season, the last in which he held the Giants' starting job. He appeared in 63 games, 58 of them behind the plate, and hit .207 with 3 home runs and 15 RBI. Topps put him at #11 in 1979, under the Giants.
Marc Hill was a catcher who played 14 seasons between 1973 and 1986 for the Cardinals, Giants, Mariners and White Sox, hitting .223 with 34 home runs and 198 RBI. The Cardinals drafted him out of high school in the tenth round in 1970. In his September 1973 debut he went 0-for-3 and grounded into a double play in his first at-bat. He hit 14 home runs for Tulsa in 1974, tying for the team lead, and backed up Ted Simmons in St. Louis after Tim McCarver was sold to Boston. The Cardinals then traded him to San Francisco for Ken Rudolph and Elias Sosa. Seattle bought his contract partway through 1980. He then signed with the White Sox and spent six seasons backing up Carlton Fisk, batting .226 for the 1983 AL West champions and getting his most Chicago playing time in 1984, when Fisk battled injuries all season. Tom Seaver lived with him part-time after joining the White Sox that year. As a minor league manager he led the 1992 Peninsula Pilots to a 74-64 record and the Carolina League title, and he also managed in the Pirates system. He died on August 24, 2025.
