1979 Topps #646 Rick Sweet

About Rick Sweet
Sharing San Diego's catching with Gene Tenace in 1978, Sweet batted .221 with 11 RBIs in 88 games. He received an individual Padres card, 1979 Topps #646. After the club acquired Bill Fahey, Sweet spent the 1979 season at Triple-A Hawaii, playing both catcher and first base.
Rick Sweet was a switch-hitting catcher for San Diego, the Mets and Seattle before becoming a minor league manager. A Gonzaga player from 1973 through 1975, he signed with the Padres after their third-round selection in the secondary phase of the 1975 draft. Seattle purchased his contract from the Mets in May 1982, and he caught for the Mariners through 1983. He became Seattle's bullpen coach in 1984 and began managing at Bellingham in 1987. Sweet led Tucson to the 1993 Pacific Coast League championship. In 2022, he received both the International League Manager of the Year award and the Mike Coolbaugh Award while managing Nashville.
