1979 Topps #502 Steve Braun

About Steve Braun
Braun returned to Kansas City in 1979 on a one-year contract, serving as a pinch hitter and as the backup to left fielder Willie Wilson while the Royals finished second behind the Angels. He appeared in 58 games and hit .267 with 4 home runs. His 1979 Topps card is #502 and shows him with the Kansas City Royals.
Steve Braun was a left-handed hitter who played third base and the outfield for 15 big league seasons, 1971 through 1985, with the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals. The Twins drafted him in the 10th round in 1966, and two years in the Army followed before he made the 1971 opening day roster out of Single-A. His best year was 1975, when he hit .302 with 11 home runs. The Mariners took him in the 1976 expansion draft, and Seattle traded him to Kansas City for Jim Colborn in 1978. He became a pinch-hitting specialist with the Cardinals, played on their 1982 World Series champions and retired as the franchise's career pinch-hit leader. He finished with a .271 average, 52 home runs and 388 RBI in 1,425 games, then coached the Red Sox minor league system as hitting coordinator from 1991 to 2002.
