About Gabby Street

Charles Evard "Gabby" Street was a defense-first catcher whose modest bat (.208 career average, roughly 504 major-league games) belied his value behind the plate. He entered pro ball in 1903 with Hopkinsville of the Class-D KITTY League and reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds on September 13, 1904, also seeing brief time with the Boston Beaneaters (1905) before finding his home. Sold to the Washington Senators, Street played 429 of his career games there from 1908 to 1911, becoming Walter Johnson's favorite backstop; he led the American League in putouts and double plays in both 1908 and 1909 and topped AL catchers with a .978 fielding percentage in 1910, finishing with New York (1912). On August 21, 1908, he made his most famous play, catching a baseball dropped 555 feet from the top of the Washington Monument. Later nicknamed "the Old Sarge" for his World War I Army service, Street managed the St. Louis Cardinals to National League pennants in 1930 and 1931 and the 1931 World Series title over the Philadelphia Athletics. He is not in the Hall of Fame. As a longtime T206 subject issued on multiple poses and many tobacco-brand backs, Street is a recognizable regular-issue name in the set rather than a scarce key card.
