About George Perring

George Wilson Perring (1884-1960) was an infielder who came out of the Beloit College preparatory academy in Wisconsin, turning pro on June 2, 1905, with hometown Beloit of the Wisconsin State League. After strong seasons at Omaha (.295 in 1906) and Toledo (.301 in 1907), the shortstop-third baseman reached the majors with the Cleveland Naps, debuting April 25, 1908. As a rookie he hit only .216 but contributed defensively during Cleveland's tense pennant chase, and on October 2, 1908, he was in the field for Addie Joss's perfect game. Perring played parts of three seasons with Cleveland (1908-1910) before returning to the minors, then resurfaced in the Federal League with the Kansas City Packers (1914-1915), driving in 67 runs in 1915. Over five big-league seasons he batted .248 with 9 home runs and 183 RBIs. Never a star, he is best remembered for the widely reprinted (and later admitted-fabricated) legend that his bat was carved from an Ohio prison gallows. A four-time Wisconsin state senior golf champion, he entered Beloit's Hall of Fame in 1976.
