About George Stovall
George Stovall broke into pro ball around 1901-1902 in the Pacific Northwest, shifting from pitcher to first base after an arm injury, and after hitting .299 for Burlington of the Iowa State League in 1904 he was sold to Cleveland. A slick-fielding first baseman (he also played second and third early on), Stovall debuted for the Cleveland Naps on July 4, 1904, and starred beside Nap Lajoie through 1911, later serving as playing manager for the St. Louis Browns (1912-1913) and the Federal League's Kansas City Packers (1914-1915). Over a career spanning 1904-1915 he batted .265 with 1,382 hits, 231 doubles, and 142 stolen bases, and set a still-standing American League record with seven assists at first base in one game (1912). Nicknamed "Firebrand" for his fiery defiance of authority, he made his name in 1911 when, as Cleveland's captain after the sudden death of ace Addie Joss, he led the players in insisting they attend Joss's Toledo funeral rather than play, forcing a postponement past AL president Ban Johnson. He later mentored young Joe Jackson and became the Federal League's chief recruiter, the first player to jump his reserve contract. Stovall is not a Hall of Famer.
