About Glenn Liebhardt

Glenn John Liebhardt was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors after a long apprenticeship in the minor leagues, including a stint with the Memphis Egyptians of the Southern Association. Born March 10, 1883, in Milton, Indiana, he debuted for the Cleveland Naps on October 2, 1906, and spent his entire big-league career in Cleveland from 1906 through 1909. His finest year was 1907, when he went 18-14 with a stingy 2.05 ERA across 38 games and 280.1 innings, striking out 110 — a workhorse deadball rookie campaign. He followed it in 1908 with a 15-16 record, a 2.20 ERA, and 146 strikeouts over 262 innings before arm trouble cut his major-league time short in 1909. Over four seasons Liebhardt compiled a 36-35 record with an excellent 2.17 ERA and 280 strikeouts in 90 games, then pitched on for years in the minors. His son, Glenn Ignatius Liebhardt, later pitched in the majors as well. He died July 13, 1956, in Cleveland. A common subject in the T206 set, his card is available with several tobacco backs.
