About Jesse Tannehill
Jesse Niles Tannehill honed his game on the Cincinnati sandlots with the Shamrocks before the hometown Reds signed him, and the slight (5-foot-8, 150-pound) left-hander debuted on June 17, 1894. A control artist who leaned on "an agonizingly slow curveball and razor-sharp control," he starred chiefly with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1897-1902), where he won a career-high 25 games in 1898 and led the National League with a 2.18 ERA in 1901 as Pittsburgh captured the pennant. He later pitched for the New York Highlanders (1903), the Boston Americans (1904-1908, going 21-11 and 22-9 in 1904-05 and helping Boston to the 1904 AL pennant), and the Washington Nationals (1908). On August 17, 1904, he threw one of the earliest no-hitters in American League history, blanking the White Sox 6-0. Tannehill compiled a 197-117 record with a 2.80 ERA, and, a fine switch-hitting athlete, also played 87 games in the outfield and batted .256 lifetime (.336 in 1900). A former saloon owner, he was superstitious and refused to shave on days he pitched. He died September 22, 1956, in Dayton, Kentucky. He is a common but genuine deadball subject in the T206 set (not a Hall of Famer).
