About Jimmy Sheckard
Jimmy Sheckard, a left-handed hitting and throwing left fielder born in 1878 in Upper Chanceford, Pennsylvania, broke into the majors with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms in 1897 after starting in the minors in 1896. He spent most of his career with Brooklyn (1897-1905), winning the National League pennant with the 1900 Superbas, before a career-defining run with the Chicago Cubs (1906-1912); he closed out in 1913 with St. Louis and Cincinnati. A prototype leadoff man and superb defender, Sheckard led the NL in home runs (1903), triples (1901), slugging (1901), stolen bases (1899, 1903), and walks in 1911 (147, then a record) and 1912. He starred on the Cubs' dynasty, playing in four World Series and winning back-to-back titles in 1907 and 1908. Over 17 seasons he batted .274 with 2,084 hits, 465 stolen bases, and 56 home runs. Widely regarded as one of the deadball era's best all-around left fielders, he was later named to retroactive Gold Glove and all-time Cubs teams, though he remains outside the Hall of Fame.
