About Bob Thorpe
Benjamin Robert "Bob" Thorpe was a right-handed right fielder born November 19, 1926, in Caryville, Florida (died October 30, 1996, in Waveland, Mississippi). A journeyman signed into pro ball in the mid-1940s, he spent five seasons in the minors, suiting up over the years for clubs such as the Atlanta Crackers, Birmingham Barons, Denver Bears and Columbus Jets. He reached the majors with the Boston Braves in 1951 and appeared in three big-league seasons with the Braves franchise in Boston (1951-1952) and Milwaukee (1953). His busiest campaign came in 1952, the Braves' final year in Boston, when he played 81 games and hit .260; that season he tied a major-league record by stroking two doubles in a single inning. In 1953 his average fell to .162 in 27 games, ending his MLB run. Overall he batted .251 with 83 hits, 3 home runs and 32 RBI in 110 games, though he remained a productive minor leaguer through 1961, reaching double-digit home runs in eleven different minor-league seasons. His card is #367, a rookie card falling in the scarce high-number series (#311-407) of the landmark 1952 Topps set - the run headlined by the iconic Mickey Mantle #311 that was printed in far lower quantities, making these numbers among the hardest to find today.
