About Dave Madison
David Pledger Madison (1921-1985) was a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Brooksville, Mississippi, and a Louisiana State University alumnus who was originally signed by the New York Yankees. After years in the minors dating to 1947, he made a brief major-league debut with the Yankees as a relief pitcher in the closing days of the 1950 season, then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1951. Purchased by the St. Louis Browns from the Yankees on April 7, 1952, he pitched for the Browns until August 14, 1952, when he was sent to the Detroit Tigers in a blockbuster eight-player trade that included Ned Garver, Jim Delsing and Vic Wertz. Madison finished a three-season big-league career (1950, 1952-1953) with an 8-7 record, a 5.70 ERA and 70 strikeouts over 74 games, throwing his final pitch on August 20, 1953. He later managed in the Yankees' farm system and scouted for several organizations. His 1952 Topps card is a true rookie card and sits in the coveted high-number series (#311-407) - the same run that carries the famous Mickey Mantle #311; these cards were printed in far smaller quantities and many were dumped, making them scarce and highly sought after today.
