About Ed Wright
Henderson Edward "Big Ed" Wright was a right-handed pitcher signed out of Tennessee semipro ball by the Class D Jackson Generals in 1938 after going 16-2 for a local club. He climbed through the minors despite illness and injury, throwing a no-hitter for the Indianapolis Indians against Kansas City in May 1945 before the Boston Braves acquired him that summer. Wright debuted with the Braves on July 29, 1945, posting a team-best rookie showing, and pitched parts of four seasons in Boston (1945-1948) before a final stint with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1952. On May 24, 1946, he came within an inning of glory, holding the Giants hitless through seven at the Polo Grounds before a Johnny Mize single spoiled the bid. Over five major-league seasons he went 25-16 with a 4.00 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 101 games. A member of the fabled "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain" Braves staff, he wryly called himself "the pray for rain." His 1952 Topps card, issued only during his brief Athletics tenure, is both his rookie card and a scarce high-number (#311-407), the series printed in far smaller quantities and often dumped, making these cards genuinely rare today. He later ran a service station in his native Dyersburg and was honored with Ed Wright Baseball Park.
