About Eddie Yuhas
Eddie Yuhas (John Edward Yuhas), a right-handed pitcher born August 5, 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio, signed with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1942 before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1943. His path to the majors was interrupted by World War II military service, and he spent five minor-league seasons beginning in 1947 before finally debuting with the Cardinals on April 17, 1952, at age 27. Working chiefly out of the bullpen, Yuhas turned in a remarkable rookie campaign, going 12-2 with a 2.72 ERA over 54 appearances; his .857 winning percentage led the entire National League, his appearances ranked third in the league, and he drew a five-way tie for 31st in NL MVP voting. His story then took a cruel turn: an arm injury in 1953 limited him to just two games and ended his career after only two big-league seasons, leaving him with a lifetime 12-2 mark and 2.72 ERA. Because his final ten decisions were all victories, Yuhas is credited with the major-league record for most consecutive wins to close out a career. His card falls in the scarce high-number series (#311-407) of Topps' landmark 1952 flagship set — the same run that carries the hobby's most famous postwar card, the #311 Mickey Mantle — printed in far smaller quantities and heavily culled at the time, making this Yuhas rookie genuinely tough to find today.
