About Ivan Delock
Ivan Martin "Ike" Delock, a right-handed pitcher whose card is listed here as "Ivan Delock," served in the Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948 before Red Sox scout Maurice DeLoof signed him and his older brother Joe out of Highland Park, Michigan. After a strong minor-league climb that peaked with a 20-4, 1.92 ERA campaign at Scranton in 1951, Delock reached Boston in 1952 and spent 11 major-league seasons, all with the Red Sox except for a brief 1963 finish with the Baltimore Orioles. He compiled an 84-75 record with a 4.03 ERA, 672 strikeouts, and six shutouts across 329 games, working as both a starter and reliever. He led the American League with 11 relief wins in 1956 and enjoyed his finest season in 1959, going 11-6 with a 2.95 ERA; in 1958 he won 14 games behind a 13-game winning streak. In a memorable big-league debut, Delock struck out Mickey Mantle with the bases loaded. This is Delock's rookie card and sits in the scarce high-number series (#311-407, led by the famous Mantle #311), which was printed in far smaller quantities and is prized by collectors today. Delock died in 2022 at age 92; he was never an All-Star and never reached the Hall of Fame.
