About Johnny Hopp
A German-Russian farm kid from Hastings, Nebraska, John Leonard "Johnny" Hopp signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936 after impressing a scout in semi-pro ball, since his hometown had no high school team. He debuted in 1939 and played 14 major-league seasons (1939-1952) as an outfielder and first baseman for the Cardinals, Boston Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers. A speedy contact hitter, Hopp batted .296 lifetime with 1,262 hits, 46 home runs, 458 RBIs and 128 stolen bases; his best year came in 1944, when he hit .336 and was hailed as one of the National League's most improved players. He earned his lone All-Star selection in 1946, starting in center field at Fenway Park and singling against Bob Feller. Nicknamed "Hippity" for his aggressive baserunning (his surname making him an easy target for headline writers) and "Cotney" for his cotton-blond hair, Hopp won four World Series titles: with the Cardinals in 1942 and 1944, and with the Yankees in 1950 and 1951. He was pinch-hitting and platooning for Detroit in 1952, his final season, the same year Topps issued this card. He died in 2003.
