About Jim Delsing
A left-handed-hitting center fielder from Rudolph, Wisconsin, Jim Delsing was signed off the semipro fields near Stevens Point in 1942 by scout Eddie Kotel and reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1948. Over ten big-league seasons he played for the White Sox, New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, and Kansas City Athletics, batting .255 with 40 home runs and 286 RBI in 822 games; his finest year came with Detroit in 1953, when he hit .288 with 11 homers and 62 RBI. Delsing is best remembered as a footnote to one of baseball's most famous stunts: on August 19, 1951, Browns owner Bill Veeck sent 3-foot-7 Eddie Gaedel up to pinch-hit, and after Gaedel walked on four pitches, Delsing trotted in to pinch-run for him. That same era, he was the Tigers center fielder replaced by 18-year-old Al Kaline when the future Hall of Famer began taking over the position. This card is a Series 4 high number (#338), the scarcer, tougher-to-find portion of the 1956 Topps set. After baseball Delsing spent three decades as an advertising salesman for a St. Louis Catholic newspaper; he died in 2006.
