About Bobby Morgan

Robert Morris Morgan (1926–2023), a right-handed infielder from Oklahoma City, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers after graduating from Classen High School in 1944 and served in World War II before being named International League MVP in 1949. He reached the majors with Brooklyn in 1950 and spent eight seasons (1950–1958) with the Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs. In Brooklyn he was a versatile utility infielder backing up Hall of Famers Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson along with Gil Hodges, Jim Gilliam, and Billy Cox, and his glovework helped preserve Carl Erskine's 1952 no-hitter. He appeared in three World Series games for the Dodgers (1952 and 1953), lining out as a pinch hitter in each Series. His finest year came in 1954 as Philadelphia's starting shortstop, when he set career highs with a .262 average, 119 hits, 14 home runs, and 50 RBI. Over 671 games Morgan batted .233 with 487 hits, 96 doubles, 53 home runs, and 217 RBI. This card places him with the Phillies among the 1956 set's scarce high-number series (Series 4). He was one of the last surviving Brooklyn Dodgers at his death in 2023.
