About Larry Doby
Lawrence Eugene "Larry" Doby (born December 13, 1923, in Camden, South Carolina; died 2003) broke into pro ball with the Negro National League's Newark Eagles in 1942, then made history on July 5, 1947, debuting with the Cleveland Indians as the first Black player in the American League, just eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson. A center fielder, he batted .288 over 13 MLB seasons with 1,515 hits, 273 home runs, and 1,099 RBI. Doby was a seven-time All-Star (1949-1955), led the AL in home runs in 1952 and 1954 and in RBI in 1954, and was a member of Cleveland's 1948 World Series champions, hitting the first home run by a Black player in Series history. Traded to the Chicago White Sox after 1955, he posted 24 homers and 102 RBI in 1956. In 1978 he became MLB's second Black manager. Doby was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. As a Series 3 card, #250 is typically found with the scarcer gray back.
