1957 Topps #384 Bobby G. Smith

About Bobby G. Smith
Bobby Gene Smith (May 28, 1934 - November 24, 2015) was an outfielder who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1952. After tearing up the minors - hitting .370 with 206 hits for Class C Fresno in 1955 and 21 homers at Class AA Houston in 1956 - he won the Cardinals' Opening Day center field job in 1957 under manager Fred Hutchinson. In his April 16, 1957 debut at Cincinnati he went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer off Art Fowler in a 13-4 win, but he hit only .211 that season and lost the job to Ken Boyer by May 20. Over eight seasons (1957-1965) with the Cardinals, Phillies, Mets, Cubs and Angels he played 376 games and batted .243. Because three Bob Smiths reached the majors in 1958, writers called him 'Bobby Gene' to avoid confusion. This is his Topps rookie card.
