1957 Topps #268 Jack Collum

Chicago Cubs · National League · Series 4 (#265-352) · pitcher
Scarce Series 4

Scarce fourth series: #265-352 is the tough run of the 1957 set — roughly twice as hard to find as the other series ("tough, not rare"). No documented reason survives; the best-researched account is that Topps printed the hastily assembled final series in quantity and left Series 4 with the shortest run.

About Jack Collum

A 5-foot-7 left-hander from Victor, Iowa, Jackie Collum overcame a childhood corn-sheller accident that mangled his left hand; he believed it helped him throw his sinking screwball. After Army Air Forces service in the Philippines, he signed with the Cardinals in 1946, went 24-2 for Class-A St. Joseph in 1948, and debuted with St. Louis in September 1951. Over nine seasons (1951-58, 1962) with the Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, Dodgers, Twins and Indians, he went 32-28 with a 4.15 ERA and 12 saves, peaking with nine wins for Cincinnati in 1955, where a 1953 Redleg News cartoon by Hank Zureick dubbed the mighty mite 'Half Collum.' Ambidextrous, Collum won both ends of a 1944 high-school doubleheader pitching lefty, then righty, and in 1954 umpire Al Barlick disallowed his right-handed pickoff throw. Traded to Chicago in December 1956 and on to Brooklyn the following May, his brief Cubs tenure survives on this scarce fourth-series card. An Iowa Baseball Hall of Famer, he ran Pioneer Oil in Grinnell after baseball.
