About Walker Cooper
William Walker Cooper was a hard-hitting catcher who signed with the Kansas City Blues in 1934 and joined the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1935 on the recommendation of his older brother, pitcher Mort Cooper. Debuting in 1940, he anchored the Cardinals to World Series titles in 1942 and 1944, forming a celebrated "brother battery" with Mort. In Game Five of the 1942 Series he picked Joe Gordon off second to kill a ninth-inning Yankee rally. An eight-time All-Star, he finished runner-up to teammate Stan Musial in the 1943 NL MVP vote. Teammates called him "Muley" out of respect for his great strength and endurance, and perhaps his stubbornness. Over 18 seasons with the Cardinals, Giants, Reds, Braves, Pirates, and Cubs, he batted .285 with 173 home runs and 812 RBIs, and set a record for grand slams with five different teams. He returned to St. Louis as a player-coach through 1957, the year of this card.
