About the 1958 Cincinnati Reds

The 1958 Topps #428 Cincinnati Redlegs team card reports a 1957 club that went 80-74 under Birdie Tebbetts and finished fourth in the National League, 15 games behind the champion Milwaukee Braves. The Redlegs were in first place at midseason, and their fans, working from pre-marked newspaper ballots and bar-room ballots, voted seven Cincinnati players into the All-Star starting lineup: Ed Bailey, Johnny Temple, Roy McMillan, Don Hoak, Frank Robinson, Gus Bell and Wally Post. Commissioner Ford Frick stepped in, and Willie Mays and Hank Aaron replaced Bell and Post. The club scored 747 runs, second only to Milwaukee, and drew 1,070,850 to Crosley Field. Card #428 was printed in series five, part of the first Topps team cards to carry checklists on the back. This copy is the scarcer numerical-back version, which lists the next series in order by card number, while the alphabetical back is the common one.

The four Series-5 team cards each exist with two backs: an alphabetical roster (the base/common version) and a numerical Series-6 checklist. The numerical back is the recognized scarcer/premium version (PSA, 2017: Tigers and Orioles numerical backs each fewer than 10 in PSA 8, none higher). Which printed first is undocumented.
