1958 Topps #464 Curt Flood
Curt Flood ROOKIE CARD - the future Cardinals center fielder whose 1969 challenge to the reserve clause reshaped baseball's labor history. One of the four key rookies.

About Curt Flood
Curtis Charles Flood (1938-1997) signed with the Cincinnati Redlegs out of Oakland in 1956 and, following a trade after the 1957 season, became the St. Louis Cardinals' regular center fielder from 1958 to 1969. A brilliant defender, he won seven straight Gold Gloves (1963-1969), made three All-Star teams, and helped the Cardinals capture World Series titles in 1964 and 1967, retiring with 1,861 hits and a .293 average. Flood's greatest impact came off the field: traded to Philadelphia after the 1969 season, he refused to report, writing Commissioner Bowie Kuhn that he did not consider himself "a piece of property to be bought and sold." His antitrust suit, Flood v. Kuhn, reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled against him in 1972. Although he lost and his career effectively ended, his stand galvanized the players' union and helped open the door to free agency. Congress later passed the Curt Flood Act of 1998.
