1958 Topps #465 Arnie Portocarrero

About Arnie Portocarrero
Portocarrero's 1958 was the best season of his career. Acquired by Baltimore from the Athletics in April, he went 15-11 with a 3.25 ERA and three shutouts, and his 15 wins set an Orioles single-season record. His Topps #465 shows him as an Oriole and sits in the sixth series, just ahead of the Sport Magazine All-Star Selection subset that begins at #475.
Arnie Portocarrero was a right-handed pitcher born in New York City to a Puerto Rican father. A schoolboy star at George Washington High, he signed with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1949 and, after Army service, arrived in the majors in 1954 as the club's hope, going 9-18 for a last-place team. A winter in Puerto Rico cost him a shoulder injury and much of his fastball. He moved with the franchise to Kansas City, spent part of 1956 in the minors, and returned to work in relief and in the rotation. Traded to Baltimore in April 1958, he had his best year and only winning season, then struggled in 1959 and pitched his last big league game in 1960. He finished 38-57 with a 4.32 ERA over 166 games.
