Frank House was a left-handed-hitting catcher from Bessemer, Alabama, who signed with Detroit out of Hueytown High School in 1948 for one of the biggest bonuses of the time, reported as $75,000 and two automobiles. He debuted in 1950 at age 20 and played ten seasons in the majors with the Tigers, Kansas City Athletics and Cincinnati Reds, batting .248 with 47 home runs and 235 RBI in 653 games. He was known as a solid defensive catcher with a fast release, a strong arm and a good feel for calling a game, and he was skilled at blocking the plate. His best year was 1955, when he hit .259 with 15 home runs and 53 RBI. After baseball he served in the Alabama Legislature and helped create the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1967. He was inducted into that hall in 1975, and a Bessemer golf course carries his name.
