1958 Topps #294 Hal Jeffcoat

About Hal Jeffcoat
Jeffcoat's 1958 Topps card is #294, printed in Series Four and showing him with Cincinnati. That summer he worked strictly out of the bullpen, 49 games without a start, going 6-8 with a 3.72 ERA, 35 strikeouts in 75 innings and nine saves. He told the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1958 that his sinker came naturally. It is one of 494 cards in the 1958 set, and it sits in the same series as Warren Spahn at #270.
Hal Jeffcoat, born in West Columbia, South Carolina, in 1924, spent twelve major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs and St. Louis Cardinals. A paratrooper in World War II, he was wounded in Italy and earned a Purple Heart before turning professional in 1946. A speedy center fielder, he led the Double-A Southern Association in hits in 1947, reached the Cubs in 1948 and hit .279 as a rookie, earning a spot on The Sporting News rookie all-star team. When his bat faded, Cubs coach Bob Scheffing pushed him to the mound, and in 1954 he became a pitcher, working mostly in relief with a natural sinker. He was traded to Cincinnati, where he moved into the rotation in 1957 and completed ten games. He finished with a 39-37 record, 25 saves and a 4.22 ERA in 245 games on the mound, plus a .248 average as a hitter. He died in Tampa in 2007.
