About Minnie Minoso

Saturnino Orestes 'Minnie' Miñoso-born in Perico, Cuba, and originally known as Orestes-began in Cuban professional ball in 1945 and played for the New York Cubans of the Negro Leagues before debuting with Cleveland in 1949. On May 1, 1951, after a trade to Chicago, he became the first Black player in White Sox history and is widely regarded as the major leagues' first Black Latino star. A dynamic left fielder, Miñoso was a nine-time All-Star, won three Gold Gloves, and led the AL in stolen bases three straight years (1951-53) and in triples three times. He batted .299 with more than 2,100 hits over a career spanning five decades, including promotional cameos in 1976 and 1980. Traded back to Cleveland after 1957, he hit a career-high 24 home runs in 1958. Beloved as 'Mr. White Sox,' Miñoso never reached a World Series. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2021 and inducted in 2022.
