1958 Topps #299 Harry Simpson

About Harry Simpson
Simpson was hitting .216 on June 15, 1958, when the Yankees sent him back to Kansas City with Bob Grim for Duke Maas and Virgil Trucks, and he finished the year at .255 across both clubs. This Series 4 card, #299, still pictures him as a Yankee, a role in which he had hit .083 in the 1957 World Series. No variation of #299 is catalogued.
Harry Simpson, born in Atlanta and raised around Dalton, Georgia, began as a pitcher-turned-outfielder with the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro National League in 1946. He was among the earliest black players in the American League when he reached Cleveland in 1951. A left-handed hitter and right-handed thrower listed at 6 feet 1 inch, he played outfield and first base, and Casey Stengel once called him the best defensive right fielder in the league. His nickname, Suitcase, was not about trades. A sportswriter borrowed it from a Toonerville Folks comic strip character because of his size 13 shoes. His best year was 1956 with Kansas City, when he hit .293 with 21 home runs and 105 RBIs and made the All-Star team. He also played for the Yankees, White Sox and Pirates, and he appeared in the 1957 World Series. Over eight seasons he hit .266 with 73 home runs and 381 RBIs in 888 games. He later worked at Goodyear Aerospace in Akron and died there in 1979.
