About Jim Hearn

Hearn's 1958 Topps card is #298, from the fourth series, and shows him with the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent the year as a reliever, appearing in 39 games with a single start and going 5-3 with a 4.17 ERA over 73 innings. It followed a 1957 in which he went 5-1 with three saves after coming over from the Giants. He was released in 1959.

Jim Hearn, called Big Jim, was a 6-foot-3 right-hander from Atlanta who pitched 13 seasons, 1947 to 1959, for the Cardinals, Giants and Phillies. Signed as a third baseman, he became a pitcher overnight in the minors in 1942. After Army service in World War II he reached St. Louis, then struggled and was put on waivers. The Giants claimed him in July 1950 and he finished 11-4 and led the National League with a 2.49 ERA. In 1951 he won 17 games, beat Brooklyn in Game One of the playoff, and won his only World Series start. He was an All-Star in 1952 and stayed with the Giants through 1956. Traded to Philadelphia in 1957, he worked mostly in relief. He finished 109-89 with a 3.81 ERA, later worked as a broadcaster for the Expos and CBC, and ran a golf school.
