About Marv Grissom

Marv Grissom's 1958 Topps card is #399, a Series Five card that shows him with the San Francisco Giants. That was the franchise's first season in San Francisco and Grissom's last full year in the majors: 51 relief appearances, a 7-5 record, a 3.99 ERA and 10 saves in 65 1/3 innings. He was traded to the Cardinals in October.

Marv Grissom, a 6-foot-3 right-hander from Los Molinos, California, never pitched until adulthood; his brother Lee, a big-league lefty, brought him to a 1938 Cincinnati tryout and he was sent home. After World War II service as a medic in the Pacific, he signed with the New York Giants on Johnny Mize's recommendation and debuted in 1946. Years of minor league work followed, including a 20-win 1951 for Seattle, and he became a major leaguer in earnest with the 1952 White Sox (12-10, 3.74). Claimed by the Giants in 1953, he became a bullpen ace beside Hoyt Wilhelm in 1954: a 2.35 ERA, an All-Star selection, and the winning pitcher in World Series Game 1 after Willie Mays's catch, with 2 2/3 scoreless innings before Dusty Rhodes's tenth-inning homer. He finished 47-45 with a 3.41 ERA and 58 saves over 356 games, retiring in 1959 with a back injury. He then spent 15 years as a major league pitching coach with the Angels, White Sox, Twins and Cubs, and died in Red Bluff in 2005.
