1958 Topps #349 Murry Dickson

About Murry Dickson
Dickson turned 41 in August 1957, was released by St. Louis after a shoulder injury and signed with Kansas City, whose park was near his Leavenworth home. That is the club on 1958 Topps #349, from Series Four. He worked mostly in relief for the Athletics until the Yankees acquired him on August 22, and he pitched four innings in the World Series.
Murry Dickson, a small right-hander from Tracy, Missouri who grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas, pitched 18 major-league seasons from 1939 to 1959. Manager Eddie Dyer called him Thomas Edison for the pitches and deliveries he constantly tried. He joined the Cardinals for good in 1942, missed 1944 and 1945 serving in the Army in Europe, and won 15 games in 1946, including the second game of the playoff with Brooklyn that sent St. Louis to the World Series. He started Game 7 against Boston. Sold to Pittsburgh in 1949, he won 20 games for a 64-win Pirates club in 1951, then led the National League in losses three straight years from 1952 to 1954, the last with Philadelphia. He returned to St. Louis in 1956 and finished as a reliever with Kansas City and the Yankees, retiring at 43 with 172 wins and a 3.66 ERA.
