About Nellie Fox
Jacob Nelson 'Nellie' Fox (1927-1975) signed with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1944 at age 16 and debuted in 1947. Traded to the Chicago White Sox, the scrappy second baseman-nicknamed the 'Mighty Mite' for his small stature and relentless play-became the heart of the club from 1950 to 1963. A 15-time All-Star, Fox won the 1959 AL MVP Award, batting .306 and narrowly edging his double-play partner Luis Aparicio. He captured three Gold Gloves, including the inaugural second-base award in 1957, and led the AL in hits four times. One of the hardest men ever to strike out, he fanned only about 216 times in more than 10,000 plate appearances; in 1958 he led the league with 187 hits. Fox batted .375 in the 1959 World Series and retired with 2,663 hits. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997, more than two decades after his career ended.
