1958 Topps #272 Ray Crone

About Ray Crone
Crone's 1958 Topps card, #272, shows him with the San Francisco Giants, the club he joined in the June 1957 trade that sent Red Schoendienst to Milwaukee. His 1958 season was rough: 14 games, one start, 1-2 and a 6.75 ERA. His last major-league appearance came July 14, and he was sent to Toronto the next day for Don Johnson. Card #272 sits in Series Four of a 494-card set, a single-player card.
Ray Crone was a lanky right-handed pitcher from Memphis, Tennessee, who starred at Christian Brothers High School and in American Legion ball, throwing five prep no-hitters before signing with the Boston Braves in 1949. He learned a slider from Art Fowler and won 19 games for Jacksonville in 1953, alongside a young Hank Aaron. Crone debuted with the Milwaukee Braves on April 13, 1954, and earned his first big-league win that May with a ten-inning complete game. He never relied on velocity, working the corners with control. His best big-league seasons came in 1955 and 1956, when he won 10 and 11 games, and his only shutout was a three-hitter over the Cubs. In 1957 he went to the New York Giants in the deal that brought Red Schoendienst to Milwaukee. He finished with a 30-30 record and a 3.87 ERA in 137 games, then pitched in the minors through 1961. Later he scouted from Texas for the Expos, Orioles, Padres and Diamondbacks. He died in January 2026 at age 94.
