1958 Topps #362 Ray Jablonski

About Ray Jablonski
Jablonski's 1958 Topps #362 shows him with the San Francisco Giants, in Series Five of the 494-card set. He had reached the Giants when the Cubs sent him to New York on opening day of 1957, and he was their regular third baseman in that final New York season, batting .289. In 1958 rookie Jim Davenport took the starting job, and Jablonski hit .230 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI in 82 games of part-time duty.
Ray Jablonski was a right-handed third baseman from Chicago who played eight major league seasons between 1953 and 1960. Signed out of the Boston Red Sox system, he was taken by the Cardinals in the 1948 minor league draft and won the Carolina League Triple Crown in 1951. He reached St. Louis in 1953 and started all 157 games at third base, hitting 21 home runs with 112 RBI, a franchise rookie record for homers, and finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. In 1954 he batted .296 with 104 RBI, started the All-Star Game at third base, and led the league in errors at the position. Shaky fielding and the arrival of Ken Boyer led the Cardinals to trade him to Cincinnati, and he later moved through the Giants, Cardinals again and the Kansas City Athletics. He finished with 687 hits, 83 home runs and a .268 average, and played in the minors through 1964. He died in Chicago in 1985.
