About Ray Monzant

Monzant stayed on the big league roster all year for the Giants' first season in San Francisco, throwing the first west coast night game on April 16 against the Dodgers. He went 8-11 with a 4.72 ERA in 43 games, 16 of them starts, and struck out 93 in 150.2 innings. His card is #447 in the sixth and final series of the 494-card 1958 Topps set, shown with San Francisco.

Ramon Monzant was a right-handed pitcher from Maracaibo, Venezuela, who spent his entire major league career with the New York and San Francisco Giants. He began pitching professionally in 1952 with the Shelby Farmers, and the Giants bought his contract that September. In 1953 he won 23 games for Danville and was named the Carolina League's most valuable player. He debuted with the Giants on July 2, 1954, and pitched for New York through 1957. One of his best games came on April 29, 1956, when a one-out, first-inning single by Del Ennis broke up a no-hit bid in an 8-1 complete-game win over the Phillies. In 1958 he stayed on the roster all season as the club moved west. He sat out 1959 with a sore arm, returned for one game in 1960, and retired after breaking his leg in the minors. He finished 16-21 with a 4.38 ERA. Venezuela's Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2006, and the Navegantes del Magallanes Hall of Fame followed in 2012.
