About Vic Power

Vic Power appears on 1958 Topps #406, a Series Five card, as a Kansas City Athletics first baseman. His 1957 average slipped to .259 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs, yet he made only two errors, ran a 69-game errorless streak and led American League first basemen in assists (99) and fielding percentage (.998). That year he also hit a leadoff and a walk-off home run in one game. Cleveland acquired him in 1958, when Gold Gloves began, and he won the first of seven straight.

Victor Felipe Pellot Pove, who played as Vic Power, was a Puerto Rican first baseman born November 1, 1927, in Arecibo. He led the American Association in hitting at .349 in 1953 for the Yankees' Kansas City farm club, yet New York never promoted him; general manager George Weiss said he was not the Yankee type, and the club chose Elston Howard instead to integrate its roster. Traded to the Philadelphia Athletics in December 1953, Power became the first Puerto Rican to play for that franchise and spent his first spring training barred from his teammates' hotels and restaurants. Over twelve seasons with the Athletics, Indians, Twins, Angels and Phillies he won seven straight Gold Gloves, from the award's 1958 debut through 1964, and was an American League All-Star in four seasons. Power finished at .284 with 1,716 hits, 126 home runs, 658 runs batted in and only 247 strikeouts in 6,046 at-bats.
