1958 Topps #320 Whitey Ford

About Whitey Ford
Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford (1928-2020) was born in New York City and signed with the Yankees in 1947, gaining the nickname "Whitey" in the minor leagues for his light blond hair. Debuting in 1950, the crafty left-hander became the ace of the Yankees' dynasty and was later dubbed "the Chairman of the Board" for his poise and command in big games. Ford was a 10-time All-Star and won the Cy Young Award in 1961, when he went 25-4. He helped New York to six World Series titles and set a Series record with 33 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, surpassing a mark previously held by Babe Ruth. His .690 winning percentage (236-106) is the highest of any pitcher with 200 or more wins, and he added a 2.75 ERA and 1,956 strikeouts. Ford was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974, alongside teammate Mickey Mantle.
