About Ernie Broglio

Broglio opened 1961 as the Cardinals' Opening Day starter, then pitched through a sore right shoulder for most of the year, taking close to twenty cortisone shots on his way to a 9-12 record with a 4.12 ERA in 26 starts. Topps issued its first League Leaders cards this season, and his 1960 work put him on three of them: #45 with the National League ERA leaders, #47 with the pitching leaders, and #49 with the strikeout leaders. Collectors chase two printing states of #47, one with a vertical black bar and one without. His own card is #420, and the sixth-series #451, "Power for Ernie," pairs him with the bats behind him, Daryl Spencer and Bill White.

Ernest Gilbert Broglio was born in Berkeley, California, on August 27, 1935, and moved with his family to El Cerrito in 1945. He signed out of El Cerrito High School with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1953, won 20 games for Stockton in 1955, then landed in the New York Giants chain and went 17-6 for the Dallas Eagles in 1957. A five-player swap sent the right-hander to the St. Louis Cardinals on October 8, 1958. He debuted on April 11, 1959, and broke through the next season at 21-9 with a 2.74 earned run average, tying Warren Spahn for the National League lead in wins, finishing second in ERA and third in the Cy Young vote, and taking the league's Sophomore of the Year award. A sore right shoulder and close to twenty cortisone shots dragged him to 9-12 in 1961, but he rebuilt his arm and won 18 games in 1963. On June 15, 1964, St. Louis sent him, Bobby Shantz and Doug Clemens to the Chicago Cubs for Lou Brock, Jack Spring and Paul Toth. Elbow surgery followed that November, Broglio won only seven more games, and the swap became the standard example of a lopsided trade. He finished 77-74 with a 3.74 ERA and died July 16, 2019.
